Isyah Asher was born in Hamburg in 1998 and continues to live and work in the Hanseatic city. A self-taught artist, he developed an early and distinctive style that combines elements of modern Pop Art with expressionist abstraction.
Asher's latest works are created through the deliberate cutting up of existing canvases. The act of fragmentation is not a destructive impulse, but rather the starting point of a new composition – a process in which dissolution and reorganization are inextricably linked.
In his paintings, Asher works with acrylics, oil pastels, and spray paint. Large brushes create a direct, physical gesture that combines traditional techniques with experimental approaches. The surface of his works carries the energy of this process – visible and tangible.
The visible seam serves as a central compositional and design element. It connects clear structures with new areas of tension, directs the eye, and makes the work's creation process visible. Moreover, the seam elevates the canvas to an object—it lends the image a sculptural quality that transcends mere surface. In doing so, he consciously plays with the balance between chaos and control. Fragments, cuts, and seams create an interplay of structure and dynamism that makes his works appear simultaneously raw and precise. The true energy of his work lies in this tension.
Asher has exhibited successfully in Hamburg, Berlin, and New York. His works are held in national and international private collections. He lives and works in Hamburg.
